The number one problem of Agriculture in developing countries today is the abysmally low productivity exhibited at every point along the value chain of most agricultural enterprises. This is as a result of inadequate and/or inappropriate input of most factors of production as and when due. The result is very low yield and inadequate return on investment. In the face of preponderant unfavourable farm gate prices, many farmers or agricultural trial entrepreneurs get discouraged and they discontinue/divest. Thus in most cases, subsistence farmers are the ones
that remain consistent, even in the midst of the low productivity, producing barely enough to feed their family and just a little extra, to sell to meet some of their other very critical obligations. This results in significant food shortages and high level of food import to augment. The consequent considerable drain on the country’s foreign exchange earnings has been at an unsustainable level. The dramatic reduction in the country’s foreign exchange earnings has now made the situation completely unbearable.
